The criminal known as the Joker first operated under the name 'the Red Hood'. In his first encounter with Batman and Robin at the Monarch Playing Card Company, he was forced to escape them by jumping into a vat of chemicals. He was assumed to have perished, but in fact he was transformed into the white-faced, green-haired and red-lipped maniac. Inspired by the playing card company, he adopted the name 'Joker' and became known as the 'Clown Prince of Crime', encountering Batman and Robin over and over again through the years. Ironically, the Joker outlived his adversary, eventually ending up in Gotham State Penitentiary.
